Mandela Day – 18 June

Mandela Day is an international day to honour the life and legacy of the late Nelson Mandela. It is celebrated on his birthday (18 July) each year. Individuals, companies, and communities are encouraged to use this day to serve their communities and to make a positive contribution.

Mandela spent 67 years fighting for social justice in South Africa and the call for 67 minutes of service on Mandela Day are to recognize this.

Woza Moya and the Hillcrests AIDS Centre Trust offer many opportunities to serve the community.

Spend 67 minutes sorting through your home for items to donate. We accept just about anything but some suggestions are:

  • Pre-loved clothes for the clothing scheme.
  • Used linen, bric-a-brac and other household goods for our white elephant charity shop.
  • Secondhand books for our book shop.
  • Unused wool, fabric and craft supplier for our haberdashery and trim shack.

You can also pop into the Hillcrest AIDS centre and support some of our wonderful initiatives.

  • Support local crafters by shopping in our Woza Moya craft shops.
  • Have a meal or coffee at our Ubuntu Café.
  • Buy plants from our nursery.

The Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust runs a Respite Unit. This 24 bed in-patient unit provides respite and palliative care to children and adults suffering from advanced stages of AIDS and/or cancer.

  • Treat our patients with donations of sweet treats, toiletries, pajamas, or socks.
