As an economic empowerment program of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust, Woza Moya’s primary objective is to help local crafters earn a sustainable income.

Coming in contact with over 400 crafters a month we realise that we can have a much bigger positive impact on the local community.

In 2024 funding from CHEP allowed us to introduce a number of health and holistic initiatives including:

– with the assistance of St John, eye testing for all staff and crafters and prescription glasses for those who needed them.
– healthy eating education facilitated by nutritionist Kaz Wilson and retired nurse Ma-Cwengi
– group life-coaching for our staff, most of whom come from disadvantaged backgrounds, by Mandy Ivey from Cafe Life.

On Friday 07 Feb we had our first wellness session for 2025 yesterday. It was great to welcome Kaz and Ma-Cwengi back.

The session was open to all HACT staff members and Woza Moya crafters, and was very well attended.

The topic was diabetes and how to manage and prevent this silent killer through healthy food choices. Avoiding the highly processed, sugar loaded foods of today and embracing the whole foods of past times.

Tamlyn IOns, our Finance Manager at HACT, is passionate and knowledgeable about diabetes. She spoke about her experiences as a mom of a diabetic child. She also shared the warning signs of this disease.

We always welcome funding or volunteers to assist us to offer training and workshops to our staff and crafters.
