Master Weaver - wire baskets

ARTIST PROFILE

Thulisile Mdlalose was born in 1980 and raised in KwaMashu, Syanda area. She has no children and lives with her 7 siblings and 2 nieces.

Thulisile started making baskets on and off in about 2009, when she was helping an old lady who lived in her area. When the old lady passed away, Thulisile continued to make the wire baskets on her own and has improved and developed her skill over time.

She is inspired by our everyday lives from a person’s outfit to nature. She is always looking for inspiration in what is going on around her.

The quality and unique designs of her hardwire baskets have attracted a lot of attention and Thulisile has been able to earn enough to provide for her daily living needs. She also believes that working on the baskets has kept her busy enabling her to deal with the stresses around her and to avoid depression.

Thulisile first visited Woza Moya during May 2024 and we are so pleased to have a crafts-woman of her skill supplying us with her work.
