Nosipho Duma was born in Mlazi. She was 15 years old and in Grade 10 at school when she painted this painting.
“I started doing art last year (2020) drawing pictures. My father taught me how to use paint and that is when I took the initiative.
My work speaks about peer pressure and issues that young women face while growing up. From alcohol, drugs and sexual diseases. The biggest issue that young women face is teenage pregnancy. This then affects them by losing their dignity, people not respecting them, increasing poverty due to children that are parentless and crime.”
Terrifying teenage pregnancy statistics in South Africa: There were 106 408 teenage pregnancies in 2019 and this figure went up by 60% in 2021. Lockdown, lack of access to clinics and gender based violence are all contributors to this shocking increase.
