Shallow Wire Picture Basket Blue and Green – 47cm – Gugu Ndimande

This large woven telephone wire bowl depicts a homestead scene. The design includes women in traditional attire, rondavels and animals. The colours are bright and cheerful.

The artist, Gugu Ndimande, has been making woven baskets for over 14 years. She learnt her trade from her mother when they relocated from Xobho to Kwamashu. The designs and patterns come from her imagination looking at what is happening now compared to what the world should be. Life is too busy and things are upside-down.

This hardwire basket is made using the coil weaving technique. The basket is constructed from a heavy gauge wire and colourful telephone wire is then coiled around the wire to create the pattern. It is hard work and requires strength to work with the wire.

This woven wire basket is approximately 47cm in diameter and 7cm deep.
