Hilda Magaga’s picture baskets are rare (as she can only make 1 or 2 a month) and are highly sought after. There are very few crafters that still use this weaving technique and who have the skill to produce baskets as detailed as Hilda’s.

This woven turquoise picture basket depicts a homestead scene with a rondawel, 2 people, and a variety of animals. Hilda produced this basket between July and September 2023.

The basket is constructed from a heavy gauge wire and colourful telephone wire is then coiled around the wire to create the pattern. It is hard work and requires strength to work with the wire.

The basket is approximately 36cm in diameter and 6cm deep.

Hilda has worked well past retirement age because she enjoys working and the extra money earned from the baskets helps her to get by.
